Adaline Bowman, played by Blake Lively, stops aging after a freak accident during a storm in 1935. While driving, she loses control of her car and plunges into a river. When she is rescued, the combination of hypothermia and a lightning strike during the rescue triggers a biological change in her, halting her aging process at the age of 29.

To protect her secret of eternal youth, Adaline frequently changes her identity and moves to different cities. She adopts new names, alters her appearance, and creates elaborate backstories to explain her lack of aging. This constant reinvention is driven by her fear of being discovered and the desire to live a normal life.

The relationship between Adaline and Ellis, played by Michiel Huisman, is central to the plot. Their romance represents a chance for Adaline to experience love and connection again, something she has avoided for decades due to her fear of losing those she cares about. Ellis's genuine affection and determination to understand her ultimately challenge Adaline's long-held beliefs about love and vulnerability.

Adaline's decision to remain ageless deeply impacts her relationship with her daughter, Flemming, portrayed by Ellen Burstyn. Flemming, who ages normally, struggles with the burden of her mother's secret and the emotional distance it creates.
