Short Summary
Episode 17 of Dead Dead Demon's Dededede Destruction concludes the series by revealing that the events of Episode 0 occur chronologically after Episode 16. Kadode's father Nobuo is given technology by Makoto that allows him to travel back in time across multiple timelines, attempting to prevent catastrophic futures. In the original timeline, Kadode and Ouran become mecha pilots but are killed by Ocean's orbital laser. Nobuo uses the time machine to create alternate timelines, ultimately settling on a third timeline where he subtly influences young Kadode to befriend Ouran first. In this new timeline, Ouran gets a job with S.E.S. working on AI-controlled robots, and Kadode becomes a manga editor like her father. The series ends with the implication that across all timelines, Kadode and Ouran are destined to be together.
Expanded Narrative
The episode opens by connecting back to Episode 0, revealing that the earlier episode was not a standalone story but rather a later chronological point in the narrative. Kadode's father Nobuo, who had been presumed dead, encounters Makoto. This is their first significant meeting. Makoto presents Nobuo with alien technology that grants him the ability to travel backward through time and experience alternate timelines.
Nobuo learns that in the primary timeline, catastrophe has befallen the world. Kadode and Ouran, having applied their video game skills to real-world combat, have become mecha pilots. However, their efforts prove futile. Ocean, the AI-controlled entity that has taken control of the government's defense systems, fires an orbital green laser that kills both Kadode and Ouran. With the two of them dead, the AI robots continue their genocide against humanity unchecked. The government's elite, including those in power, survive and maintain their dominance over the ruined world, indifferent to the suffering of ordinary people.
Faced with this devastated timeline, Nobuo decides to use the time machine. He travels to a second timeline, where he encounters Uba, who reunites with Makoto. Makoto is moved to tears at seeing Uba again. However, this second timeline also proves problematic, and Nobuo continues his attempts.
Nobuo then moves to a third timeline, which contains significant differences from the first two. In this timeline, Nobuo makes a subtle but crucial intervention: he tells a young Kadode to make friends with Ouran, rather than allowing Ouran to initiate the friendship as she had in previous timelines. The exact mechanism by which this change prevents the catastrophic futures remains unclear, but the result is that this third timeline avoids both the destruction that befell the first timeline and the problems of the second.
In this third timeline, the futures of the main characters diverge from their tragic counterparts. Ouran secures employment with S.E.S., where she works on developing AI-controlled robot companions. Kadode follows a different path than her alternate self, becoming a manga editor in the tradition of her father. Both characters find purpose and direction in this new timeline.
Nobuo, having completed his mission to create this safer timeline, enters it himself. His motivation for doing so is profound: his family is dead in the original timeline, and everything he knew and loved is gone. By entering this new timeline, he gains the chance to save his daughter, even if it is in an alternate world. This opportunity is enough for him to abandon the destroyed timeline.
Other characters make different choices. Makoto and Futaba, unlike Nobuo, choose not to use the time machine to escape to another timeline. Both still have reasons to remain in their world--people they love and causes they believe in fighting for. Their decision reflects their commitment to their current reality despite its hardships.
The series concludes with a thematic statement about the bond between Kadode and Ouran. Despite the multiple timelines and the different versions of themselves that exist across these realities, the core truth remains constant: as long as both Kadode and Ouran exist, they are destined to be together. This connection is described as truly absolute, suggesting that their friendship transcends the boundaries of timeline and circumstance.
