The movie explores several specific underground locations including ancient sacred caves in Mexico's Yucatan cave system, flooded storm drains inhabited by marginalized people, melting glaciers, underwater burial chambers, and a deep underground laboratory two kilometers beneath the surface in Canada called SNOLAB where scientists search for dark matter.

The main characters include Bradley Garrett, an urban explorer who investigates forgotten and abandoned subterranean systems such as storm drains and tunnels; Mariangela Lisanti, a theoretical physicist working in the deep underground SNOLAB laboratory searching for dark matter; and the film is narrated by Sandra Hüller. The director Rob Petit also appears as the guide through these underground worlds.

The deep underground laboratory, SNOLAB, located two kilometers beneath the surface in Canada, is significant as it is a site where Mariangela Lisanti and her colleagues conduct experiments to detect dark matter particles. This laboratory is isolated from surface noise and elements to enable sensitive measurements of nuclear recoils caused by dark matter, representing a scientific frontier beneath the Earth.

The film uses stunning cinematography by Ruben Woodin Dechamps to capture the alien and otherworldly beauty of the underground environments. It includes imagery of pulsating root systems in cenotes, sterile scientific labs, flooded tunnels, and graffiti murals in urban tunnels. The sound design incorporates natural underground sounds like echoing droplets and silence to create an immersive sensory experience.

Bradley Garrett explores the subterranean urban environments such as storm drains and abandoned tunnels beneath cities. He documents the lives of marginalized people who live underground to escape harsh surface conditions and reveals the discarded materials and forgotten worlds hidden beneath urban areas, providing a human and social dimension to the film's exploration of the underland.
