Margarita, a 22-year-old autistic woman, faces social difficulties such as being teased over her name and misunderstood by children, while adults around her are generally supportive. She struggles with finding fulfillment in work and balancing her own happiness with her mother Sandy's concerns for her safety and future independence.

Sandy, who is diagnosed with cancer, is anxious about Margarita's future and pushes her to become self-sufficient by finding a job. Their relationship is marked by heartfelt arguments and care, with Sandy trying to protect Margarita while preparing her for life without her. This dynamic drives much of the emotional tension in the film.

Margarita joins a hobby horse dance team, an eccentric sport involving mimicking equestrian events with stick horses, which provides her a sense of community and belonging. The team is mostly composed of children about ten years younger than her, and through this group, Margarita finds fulfillment and connection beyond her job at the Halloween store.

The coach, played by Jerod Haynes, leads the hobby horse dance team and acts as a mentor to Margarita. He has his own personal trauma to heal, and his supportive role helps Margarita navigate her challenges and find a place in the community.

Margarita reluctantly takes a job at a local Halloween store working for Hank, who understands her differences and reassures her mother. However, the job does not bring her fulfillment and adds to her stress, which contrasts with the joy she finds in hobby horsing.
