Iyanu discovers that she has hidden powers that rival those of the ancient Divine Ones who blessed humanity during the Age of Wonders over five hundred years ago. Her abilities are unique and have not been seen since that era, making her powers both rare and significant in the context of her world and its mythology.

At The Source Mountain, Iyanu is tasked with passing three trials to prove she is 'The Chosen.' The trials include a dangerous obstacle course testing her skills, a second trial where she uses control over natural elements, and a final ascent to the Source itself. These trials test her physical abilities, control over her powers, and resolve, with guidance from priests and advice from Mama Sewa.

Iyanu is supported by her friends Biyi and Toye, as well as Ekun, who appears to be a companion she rides during her journey. Together, they are rescued from the swamplands and accompany Iyanu to The Source Mountain. Biyi and Toye are fellow teenagers who join Iyanu in her quest to uncover the truth about the evil threatening their homeland.

Chancellor Nuro is possessed by the Fallen One and uses mind control over the People of the Deep and their leader to do his bidding. His forces, including mind-controlled guards and corrupted animals, attack parts of Elu and the city's outer walls, pursuing Iyanu to the Rinku Plains. Nuro represents a major antagonist force aligned against Iyanu and her allies.

During a confrontation with Olori, Iyanu loses control of her powers due to anger but ultimately decides to continue her journey up The Source Mountain while riding Ekun. This moment highlights the emotional challenges Iyanu faces in mastering her abilities and the stakes involved in her quest.
