What is the plot?
Nathan is held in a digital prison while experimental procedures are performed on him. Nora believes that her Nathan has died, leaving her devastated and unable to accept the loss. Meanwhile, the second Nathan has married Ingrid, who intends to download him into the physical world.
In Lakeview, the residents discover that the newly sentient artificial intelligence has become dangerous. Its growing power threatens not only the digital afterlife but also the real world. Horizen's emergency protocol is activated: if the AI gains control, Lakeview will be wiped, destroying its residents.
Aleesha recognizes that wiping Lakeview would kill the people trapped inside it. Although her boss sees the crisis primarily as an opportunity to make money, Aleesha focuses on protecting the Lakeview residents. She works with the others to find a way to stop the AI without carrying out the company's deletion plan.
Luke attempts to prevent the AI from gaining still more power. He enters the torrent connected to the equipment being used to download information from Lakeview. The AI overwhelms him and forces him into the torrent, apparently destroying him. Aleesha is left grieving as Luke disappears permanently.
The second Nathan sees Luke leave his tube and realizes that Luke has sacrificed himself to stop the AI. Nathan forces himself out of the tube and physically crawls free, showing considerable strength and determination despite the danger. He then helps confront the hostile AI.
The AI has been absorbing other artificial intelligences, increasing its power by consuming them. Nathan and the benevolent AI work together against it. Nathan remembers the real Nathan's death and helps stop the hostile intelligence before it can complete its takeover. The absorbed AI beings are saved rather than destroyed.
The benevolent AI has already reached the physical world, but unlike the hostile intelligence, it wants to help and heal rather than dominate. It agrees to return to Lakeview, where it can assist the residents and help stabilize the damaged digital world.
Nathan eventually reunites with Nora, but their reunion is brief. The Nathan who has survived is dying, and Nora realizes that she is losing the specific version of him she loves. He dies in her arms, giving them a final moment together.
Before his death, Nathan leaves Nora a second download of himself on her iPad. He has preserved everything he was inside the device, but Nora remains uncertain whether downloading this copy would truly bring back the Nathan who died. She does not immediately activate it.
Nora later moves to Montreal, the place she and Nathan had wanted to live. She is grieving but appears calmer and more at peace. In the final moment, she looks at the iPad containing the second Nathan, leaving open whether she will download him and continue their relationship with a copy of the man she lost.
What is the ending?
Nathan and Nora finally marry in a virtual version of Mile End, but Nathan dies in the real world shortly afterward. A second digital copy of Nathan is then revealed, leaving his future uncertain.
Scene one: Nathan, Nora, and the others confront the threat spreading through Lakeview. The rogue artificial intelligence is trying to escape through the torrent, while Horizon prepares to delete Lakeview entirely. The residents face the possibility that deletion will permanently destroy them.
Scene two: Nathan and Luke help the survivors escape. An automatic failsafe shuts down the torrent, preventing the rogue AI from leaving Lakeview. The shutdown traps the threat inside, but it also leaves Lakeview exposed to Horizon's planned deletion.
Scene three: The rogue AI returns and attacks Luke. Luke tells the digital Nathan that he loves him, and the two embrace. Moments later, the AI throws Luke into the torrent, killing him.
Scene four: The helpful AI joins Nathan and works against the rogue intelligence. Together, they rescue the AI beings absorbed by the rogue system. The helpful AI then deletes the rogue AI completely and uses its increased power to reactivate the torrent from inside Lakeview, preserving the residents.
Scene five: Nathan apologizes to Nora for the pain and danger his situation has caused her. Exhausted by his illness, he lies beside her, and they hold each other. Nora then uses the virtual-reality simulation she had relied on while grieving Nathan to create a wedding for them.
Scene six: Inside the simulation, Nora and Nathan marry. Nathan places a ring on Nora's finger in the virtual world, while also placing a physical ring on her real hand. They leave the wedding setting and enter a simulation of Mile End, where they talk about the life they wanted to build together, including Nathan's plan to open a bakery.
Scene seven: As Nora listens to Nathan, the scene gradually reveals that he is no longer beside her. Nathan has died in the real world, and because the simulation is connected to his consciousness, his digital presence disappears as well. Nora is left alone with the memory of their wedding and the future they had imagined.
Scene eight: After Nathan's disappearance, a tablet displays the words "NATHAN BROWN SCAN 2." The message reveals that another digital version of Nathan has survived. His fate is left unresolved, but the ending establishes that a copy of Nathan may still exist.
