Look Back (2024)

Fujino returns to drawing after Kyomoto's death, and the film ends with her quietly keeping that promise to herself and to their shared past. The ending is tragic because Kyomoto is gone, but Fujino is left alive and still making manga, carrying on in the way Kyomoto would have wanted.

Kyomoto's fate is death in the disaster, and Fujino's fate is survival followed by grief, then a return to work. The movie closes on Fujino not collapsing into that grief forever, but sitting back at her craft and continuing her life through drawing.

Fujino's classroom success with manga has already been established before the ending, and Kyomoto had been the person who first pushed her to grow beyond simple praise from classmates. Over time, the two girls become close through drawing, and that shared bond becomes the center of the story.

By the end, that bond has been shattered by Kyomoto's death, and Fujino is shown confronting what that loss means for her own future. The final image lingers on Fujino at work, signaling that she has decided to continue making manga rather than stop after the tragedy.
